Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify basic linguistic similarities and differences between Auslan and other signed languages. It also requires the ability to research the use of International Sign.This unit applies to independent and proficient users of Auslan who could use knowledge of other sign languages or International Sign to engage in communications requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on concrete matters.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Identify methods to communicate with Deaf people using different sign languages.
  • Identify a range of formal circumstances where different Deaf communities meet.
  • Research linguistic and visual communication methods used between Deaf people using different sign languages.
  • Analyse advantages and disadvantages of different communication methods.
  • Research the use of International Sign for communication between signers who use different sign languages.
       
Element: Analyse and compare linguistic features of Auslan with other sign languages.
  • Research one sign language, other than Auslan, to identify basic linguistic features.
  • Compare basic linguistic features of Auslan with other sign language to identify similarities and differences.
  • Communicate simple and direct limited routine information using features of the other sign language or using features of International Sign.

Assessment Tasks
